Heart
About the Heart
The heart is a muscular organ about the size of a fist, located in the mediastinum between the lungs. It pumps approximately 5 liters of blood per minute at rest, rising several fold during strenuous exercise. The heart has four chambers: right atrium and right ventricle pumping deoxygenated blood to the lungs, and left atrium and left ventricle pumping oxygenated blood to the body. Four valves ensure one way flow: tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral bicuspid, and aortic. The coronary arteries left and right supply the heart muscle itself. The cardiac conduction system SA node, AV node, bundle of His, Purkinje fibers generates and distributes electrical impulses at 60 to 100 beats per minute. The heart beats approximately 100,000 times daily, pumping 7,500 liters of blood.
